Grossmont College Arts and Humanities Department brings cancer awareness to our campus by participating in the “One Book, One Campus” organization in honor of this year’s featured book: The Emperor of all Maladies by scientist Siddhartha Mukherjee. “One Book, One Campus” is a multiple campus-wide concept of spreading the message of a single book by hosting events and including it in the curriculum.  This year’s Pulitzer Prize winning book is a memoir about Cancer with a broad point of view, covering the vastly different scientific, political, and personal aspects of Cancer.  “You don’t only learn about the science of Cancer, but a range of things and how it spins out into our culture,” said English professor and Chief Coordinator of Grossmont’s “One Book, One Campus” Dr. Tate Hurvitz, “it’s not just about the disease and it’s beautifully written”.

The Emperor of all Maladies uniquely impacted Grossmont College art instructor and artist Stephanie Bedwell, bringing her to a strong realization about her journey with cancer. “I didn’t want my I.D. to be ‘cancer survivor’, declared Bedwell, “cancer is only something that happened to me”. Bedwell held her “Art, the Body, and Cancer” presentation at the Griffin Gate on Wednesday March 12th as a contribution to this year’s “One Book, One Campus” organization.  She opened up to the audience about her experience with art as a cancer survivor and elaborated on her hand-made sculptures and their themes of vulnerability and survival.

“To make art: that is healing,” Bedwell expressed to the audience, “I hated feeling like the victim so I grabbed power any way that I could”. She encouraged her audience to find meaning in what they do.  Her presentation was particularly inspiring to Grossmont College art major Evan Lopez.  “I love getting into the sub context of how the art is made and coming to this will spark ideas,” said Lopez. The Visual Arts and Humanities department is currently exhibiting one of Bedwell’s sculptures, along with 99 other pieces of artwork, at the “Artists for Healing” exhibit at the Hyde Art Gallery until April 3d. The art is literally healing: A $100 donation to the American Cancer Society grants the donator one piece of art of his/her choice.  All 100 pieces of art displayed range from photography to sculptures to paintings.  Some of the pieces have a short letter from the artist nearby encouraging the viewer to donate.

“It was up to every individual artist to relate their artwork to their experience or view on cancer” explained Dr. Hurvitz about the exhibit. Grossmont College has been participating along with Cuyamaca College, UCSD, SDSU, Point Loma Nazarene, and other educational institutions to sponsor this awareness project.
