GROSSMONT COLLEGE (Press Release)– Photography covering the works of students in a 1972 workshop and their modern-day works will be exhibited from November 15 through December 16 at the Hyde Art Gallery on campus.
“Still Photographers” is a reunion exhibition of photographers from Charles Fridenmaker’s 1972 summer workshop at Grossmont College. Exhibitors will include Kim Blackford, Tim Burke, Terry Chostner, Donna Cosentino, Hern Crane, Gordon Darby, Bill Fields, Tom Gregory, Marc Lieberman, Kay Levie, Alfred Pagano, Susan Richardson, Michael Turner and Fridenmaker himself, who died suddenly in his early 30’s shortly after leading the workshop. Curator is David Wing, who was appointed to succeed Fridenmaker and teach in the Grossmont College photography program until his retirement in 2003.
The exhibition will also include a “History Wall” including casual photographs from 1972 depicting instructor and students at work and at leisure.
Conceived by Fields and Pagano as a tribute to Fridenmaker, the exhibit also anticipates the 50th anniversary celebration of the founding of Grossmont College next year. The Hyde Art Gallery is looking back 38 years over the evolving careers of these artists as it presents this exhibition.
An opening event in honor of the artists will be on Tuesday, November 16, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Gallery hours are Monday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The gallery is closed Friday to Sunday and on legal holidays. Admission is free.
