Former women’s soccer coach Howard Hawver dies

GROSSMONT COLLEGE — The recent Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year recipient, Howard Hawver  died early morning on Sunday December, 5th, after courageously battling Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS), campus officials announced.

He will be remembered here at Grossmont as part-time faculty member in Grossmont College’s  Exercise Science Department and as the inspiration of the women’s soccer program, serving as the team’s coach for 15 seasons.

In 2008, he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, a progressive ailment that  forced a leave of absence for this season. The PCAC Coach of the year award is annually awarded to one women’s coach and one men’s coach.

During his years of coaching, he’s led the Griffins to 12 different playoffs and of those has won 5 conference championships. His legacy will surely be remembered here at Grossmont College.

Memorial services will be held on Sunday, December 26, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Andrews Lutheran Church on Lake Murray Blvd and Jackson. A  reception celebrating his life will follow.
