GROSSMONT COLLEGE, Sept. 1–The Grossmont College women’s soccer team began its 2010 season with two nonconference road games, returning home with a tie and a loss.
The Lady Griffins tied Golden West 2-2 on August 27, but lost on August 31 to El Camino 0-1 when they gave up a last-minute goal.
Grossmont’s pair of goals in the first game came from forwards Ashley Schramm and Elisa Maganuco. Maganuco assisted on Schramm’s goal in the 25th minute; Schramm returned the favor for Maganuco’s 84th minute score. However, Golden West struck back twice in the time between Grossmont’s goals.
Head coach Dave Ridenour was able to find “a lot of positives” in the Golden West game, “considering it was our first time on the field and we learned a lot from each other.” The Grossmont lineup is loaded with freshmen, with only four players returning from last year’s 8-9-1 squad.
Ridenour said Grossmont showed significant improvement in the second game “against a much better opponent.” But Grossmont‘s three shots on goal were unable to get past star El Camino goalkeeper Alicia Sala. Hopes of salvaging a scoreless tie vanished when El Camino put together an extended passing sequence in the 85th minute that resulted in a goal by Venessa Reid.
The team’s home opener is this Friday, September 3, at 3 p.m against Chaffey (who, incidentally, beat El Camino this season). The first Pacific Coast Conference game will be at Cuyamaca on September 14. Grossmont will host its first conference game against Mira Costa at 1:00 p.m on September 21.
