GROSSMONT COLLEGE—The Lady Griffins basketball team currently is in undisputed possession of first place, having compiled a 7-1 record in conference play.   Closely behind is Southwestern College which currently has a 6-1 record. Both teams will play on Friday, with Grossmont  battling  Imperial Valley and Southwestern squaring off against San Diego Mesa.

When Grossmont played Southwestern last Friday, there was insurmountable tension in  the Grossmont gym.  At that point, Southwestern was the conference leader with a 6-0 record, and Grossmont was in second place with a 5-1 record.

The game was a nail biter, with the scores only a few points apart most of the game.  An enthusiastic and partisan crowd may have given Grossmont the advantage, as they ended up with a four-point victory margin, winning 58-54.

Grossmont had another game on Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Mira Costa .  Even without a large contingent of Grossmont fans, they prevailed 68-65.   Southwestern meanwhile had a bye, so Grossmont was able to take over possession of first place.

“I’m feeling pretty good,” grinned Ashleigh King after the Southwestern game.

“We compete to win,” she added. “Defense wins the games.”
