GROSSMONT COLLEGE –The Griffins’ softball centerfielder Lindsay Thorstenson and third baseman Jazmine Hamme hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the Griffins 2-0 victory over rival Southwestern on Leap Day, Feb. 29.
The game had matched 8-7 Grossmont against a 7-7 but gritty Southwestern squad. This was the beginning of the schedule for each in Pacific Coast Conference play. Grossmont came into the day 1-0 in the league, while Southwestern came in with an even record of 1-1.
The contest proved to be a good one pitting two evenly matched teams. The two squads combined for only two runs and ten hits over seven innings of play. The third inning was the key as leftfielder Vanessa Mchugh advanced to 2nd base on a groundout and then scored on the double by Thorstenson. Thorstenson in return was doubled home by Hamme thus capping the scoring for the day.
Starting Pitcher Mariza Maldonado put in a strong performance as she got the win and a complete game shutout. Maldonado gave up seven hits but all of them were scattered as Southwestern left six on base.
The hard- fought win brings Grossmont’s record to 9-7 and into first place in the PCC at 2-0. Only time will tell if the Griffins will leap frog the rest of their competition as they did today
