GROSSMONT COLLEGE — With another win on Sept. 28, the Grossmont Women’s soccer team is undefeated in conference play as it beat the Palomar Comets, 4-1.
The Griffins began the game attacking with an immediate goal in the 3rd minute to give them a comfortable 1-0 lead early in the half. Elisa Maganuco took a long ball down the sideline and sent a cross on the ground for Annie Roberts to put the ball in the back of the net.
Moments later, in the 15th minute, Ashley Schramm extended the lead after receiving a perfect pass from Roberts. It was a clinical finish as Schramm was able to bury it in the side netting of the goal. The goals didn’t end there though, Maganuco broke free from her defender and finished the play perfectly with a goal of her own in the 38th minute.
The Griffins’ defensive back line played solid which made it difficult for the opposing offense to penetrate. This forced their opponents to take shots from uncomfortable distances that usually ended up in easy saves for the Griffin’s Goalkeeper, Angel Wasecko.
However, there were two counted instances where there were breakdowns in the Griffin defense. Grossmont left a striker unmarked in front of the goal, but lucky for the Griffins, the Comet player shot the ball too high. Another time came in the closing minutes of the first half, when the Griffins committed an unnecessary foul that lead to a goal. Andrea Hill of the Comets took the free kick and played the ball to the front part of the goal, Amy Rosen was there to knock it in; thus preventing Grossmont’s potential shutout.
After the half Roberts recorded her second goal of the game on a pass from Schramm and the Griffins defense held the Comets to just one goal the entire game. The Griffins extend their undefeated conference play record to 5 wins, while being 5-2-2 overall for the season.
Their next game is at Imperial Valley on Friday at 1 p.m.
