GROSSMONT COLLEGE – A remembrance service for Spencer David Clay, who was the son of Associate Dean Carrie Clay as well as a senior project engineer on Grossmont College’s new student center, will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 9, at the South Ponto of South Carlsbad State Beach.
The memorial service will be followed by a celebration of his life at 12:30 p.m. at Charlie’s, 751 F. Street in Encinitas. Attendees are requested to “wear colorful clothing,” according to Bernadette Black, administrative assistant to Grossmont President Dr. Sunny Cooke.
Clay died at his home in Pacific Beach on Thursday, Sept. 30, of cardiac arrest believed brought on by a blood clot.
A 2005 graduate in construction management from Chico State College, Clay served as an engineer on three projects in the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District: the Grossmont Student Center, and the Communications Arts Building and the Learning Resources Center at Cuyamaca College. Employed by general contractors Rudolph and Sletten, he also worked on the J. Paul Summit Building in Rancho Bernardo, according to his friend and supervisor Dennis Dizon, a senior project manager.
“He was on top of the world, very skilled, and very technical from a construction standpoint,” Dizon said. “He could build just about anything. He was a builder with a tremendous work ethic, a real superstar.”
His mother, Carrie Clay, serves at Grossmont as associate dean for career and technical education.
