Grossmont College’s Theatre Arts Department is excited to present “Misbehaving Women”, a staged reading about bold women who have made history. The presentation will take place on February 21st and February 22nd, from 7:30pm to 9:30pm in Building 26, Room 220.
This event will be held as a fundraiser for the Theatre Arts program. All donations and ticket money will go straight towards scholarships and classes for Theatre Arts students at Grossmont College.
The title Misbehaving Women derives from the well-known phrase of Thatcher Ulrich: “Well behaved women seldom make history”. The performance, produced by Theatre Arts instructor Jeannette Thomas and inspired by Theatre Arts professor Beth Duggan, has already sparked the interest of many students and is intended to leave something very special in the viewer’s mind, using examples of courageous women from both history and modern times who “misbehaved” according to the social norm of their time.
But what does it mean to misbehave? Instructor Thomas expects the presentation to communicate the significance of stepping out of the norm as a courageous woman. “What did want future generations to know,” said Thomas, “about what it is to be a woman and how far we’ve come, and how far we need to go?” Thomas hopes the performance will give attendees a fresh perspective on how much women still need to fight for women’s rights.
“The fight is not over; we still live in a world governed by a patriarchal society,” said Thomas. The special event is an opportunity to provide to the audience inspiration about the changing roles of women throughout the world.
