Movie Review: ‘Limitless’

LA MESA–Limitless is based on the 2001 techno-thriller novel by Alan Glynn. The film adaptation focuses on protagonist Eddie Morra (Bradley Cooper) a New York city writer who doesn’t look the part of someone who has anything going for himself, in-fact he himself says during the introduction of the film, “What kind of a guy without a drug or alcohol problem looks like this?”

Lindy (Abby Cornish) Morra’s love interest and focal of one the stories many subplots, has recently dumped the down and out writer, to add insult to injury his book deal is in jeopardy. Enter Vernon the brother of Morra’s ex-wife Mellissa (Anna Friel), an ex-drug dealer who now “does some consulting for a pharmaceutical company.”

Vernon offers Morra a small pill that will boost his brain activity from 20% to 100%.  Reluctantly Morra takes the pill, believing that he has nothing to lose by doing so.  Down the rabbit hole the film goes as Morra discovers the small pill’s power for awakening his brain’s dormant abilities.

The film is a fasted-paced trip, and really does fit its genre title techno-thriller.  Director Neil Burger’s stunning visuals compliment Leslie Dixon’s screen-play, effectively taking the viewer almost behind the eyes of Eddie Morra. Adding to the viewing-experience is the film’s expressive use of lighting, especially the contrasting of dark and bright.

The small but fantastic supporting roles of both Robert De Niro and Abbie Cornish compliment well the lead, Bradley Cooper (whose role is – atypical for him – not comedic).

The film is a must-see that may possibly inspire viewers to go pick up the novel.  With all things powerful comes danger.  Will Eddie Morra come out unscathed or will the pill take control of his life? I guess you will have to see for yourself.
