BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (USANN4)–A professors’ association wants Louisiana State University to drop plans to lay off 14 foreign-language instructors. The school informed the instructors that their appointments would be terminated in January for budgetary and educational reasons. To trim costs, LSU is planning to stop offering majors in German and Latin. It is also scaling back its foreign-language offerings.
The American Association of University Professors says that nearly all of the instructors have worked at the university full-time for at least seven years. It argues that the instructors should be treated as if they had tenure and must receive due process before being terminated.
