SAN DIEGO (Press Release) — The Grossmont Symphony Orchestra and Master Chorale will give concerts celebrating African-American composers at two churches this weekend.
On Saturday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m., conductor Ken Anderson and the MLK Community Choir of San Diego will join the Grossmont Symphony Orchestra and Master Chorale in a performance at Calvary Baptist Church of San Diego, 719 E. Chavez Parkway in San Diego. On Sunday evening, oct. 30, a second performance will be given at the Paradise Valley Seventh Day Adventist Church, 2701 Easst 8th St., in neighboring National City.
There is no admission charge but free will offerings are enoucraged.
According to Anderson, The evening’s choral concert celebrates the music of African-American composers, from Classical to Gospel. Featured is the hearalded oratorio The Ordering of Moses by composer Robert Nathaniel Dett. Randall Tweed and Ken Anderson lead this concert featuring the combined choirs of the MLK Jr. Community Choir San Diego, the Grossmont Master Chorale and Gospel Choir. Professional guest soloists include Michael Morgan, Dale Fleming, Kimberly Milton and William “BJ” Robinson.
The repertoire will includeRobert Nathaniel Dett The Ordering of Moses; Ken Berg Roll, Jordan Roll; Israel Houghton Lord, You Are Good; Donnie McClurkin Jesus Is Mine.
Anderson is an internationally recognized Gospel musician as well as being the music director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Choir San Diego (MLKCCSD), commonly referred to as the MLK Choir. The MLK Choir provides scholarships for graduating high school seniors in the visual and performing arts (www.mlkccsd.net). Anderson is a Lecturer at the University of California San Diego, and music director of the UCSD Gospel Choir. He is also a pastor at Grace Church San Diego. In addition to his music director responsibilities, Anderson maintains a private voice studio, as well as leading Gospel music workshops throughout the U.S. and Europe. He is also a foster father to nine (9) sons—all grown!
Anderson has been a member of the Grossmont College Music Faculty since the Fall of 2006. His classes include Gospel Choir and Voice.
Randall Tweed, D.M.A., Music Director, has been conducting opera, symphony, and chorus throughout Southern and Baja California since joining the music faculty in 1986. Dr. Tweed has frequently appeared as guest conductor on concert music series throughout Southern California including the Cabrillo Chamber Orchestra, San Diego Ballet, Jean Isaacs San Diego Dance Theatre, United States International Orchestra, Spreckels Organ Society, and various church music concert series. In the area of education
Tweed has appeared as adjudicator for the California Music Teachers Association, the Music Educator’s National Conference and has twice appeared as conductor for the Suzuki awards concerts. Tweed’s performing experience is both in the areas of vocal and instrumental fields winning competitions sponsored by the La Jolla Civic University Orchestra and the Musical Merit Foundation of Greater San Diego.. Tweed earned the Doctorate in Musical Arts (D.M.A.) from the School of Music at Arizona State University, located in Tempe, Arizona. He has also completed two Master of Music degrees from the University of Southern California in addition to pursuing post-graduate study in Berlin, Germany (studying at the Berliner Kirchenmusikschule) where he was a recipient of a Konrad Adenauer Foundation Fellowship.
The Grossmont Master Chorale, is one of three vocal ensembles in the music department at Grossmont College. Under Tweed’s musical direction, the chorale performs throughout Greater San Diego in a variety of musical venues in addition to being a frequent performer with the Grossmont Symphony Orchestra at the East County Performing Arts Center.
Numbering between forty and fifty, the Grossmont Master Chorale’s membership includes music and non-music majors, dedicated community singers and music teachers. Regular performing venues include noted concert music series such as The Organ Pavilion at San Diego’s Balboa Park, and Point Loma Nazarene University, notable church concert series to include First Presbyterian Church of San Diego, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, and Santa Sophia Catholic Church, and notable retirement communities such as Casa de Mañana of La Jolla, Frederica Manor of Chula Vista, and Mt. Miguel Covenant Village of Spring Valley.
