This Wednesday, Grossmont’s dance department put on a Pau Hana to celebrate the end of the Spring semester. The word “Pau Hana” is Polynesian for “end of work.” The dance performance was free and open to the public.
The Pau Hana performance included dances from the Grossmont College Dance Company and the various dance classes the college offers, such as introduction to dance, ballet, modern, jazz, tap, hip-hop, dance improvisation and social ballroom. Grossmont’s dance faculty choreographed each dance performed at the Pau Hana.
The Grossmont College Dance Company visits different high schools and middle schools in the area to perform a variety of dance styles, including modern and hip-hop. The Dance Company will perform on campus in the main quad May 26 at 1 p.m.
Each dance was captivating in its own way. The modern dances were emotional, dramatic and melancholy. The jazz dances were fun and joyful as they danced to the song “Stateside” by PinkPantheress and the hip-hop dances were energetic and exciting.
Since this event showcases dance performances from almost every dance class offered at Grossmont College, students can get a sneak peek of what these dance classes explore.
The Pau Hana had dancers from all dance levels, from beginners to advanced dancers, making the event a stress free event for dancers from all levels.
As I watched the performances, it had me considering joining a dance class next semester and wanting to dance to the music too. If you missed the Pau Hana for the spring semester, there will be another in the fall.
