In California, and across the United States, we experienced a record-breaking heatwave this past March. Now, people are worried about the approaching summer season.
The West Coast, specifically, reached temperatures ranging around 90 to 110 degrees fahrenheit. This unprecedented heat led many residents to experience heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Although heat exhaustion isn’t life-threatening, it often occurs before heatstroke, which can be detrimental to your body long term.
There are clear signs of heat exhaustion to look out for. Such as: dizziness, fatigue, headache and nausea in extreme heat. However, when heatstroke occurs, you may also experience a body temperature reaching about 104 degrees. You could also experience vomiting, confusion, altered speech and rapid breathing.
If you notice signs of heat exhaustion, make sure to drink water and move to a cooler area before symptoms worsen. While in the case of heatstroke, it’s important to do the same, as well as to contact medical assistance as soon as possible. Unattended cases of heatstroke may be life-threatening.
