Commentary: Men’s basketball team building for next year

GROSSMONT COLLEGE — With the basketball season in full swing the Griffins have been playing spoiler to quite a number of top 20 teams in the California Community College rankings, but the buck stops there with an inconsistent offense and a loss column that has a number greater than their win column. The Griffins at 8-9 have been in  an uphill battle all season long.

The bright spot in this lack luster season is the fact that the Griffins display great young talent. Tim Patrick a freshman forward out of University City High School has a great athletic ability and an uncanny knack of finding the ball. The freshman Patrick also earned All-tournament honors as the Griffins knocked off then 9th ranked Cuesta of San Luis Obispo turning out a stellar performance and helping lift the Griffins to the 40th annual Grossmont Invitational.

Returning sophomores who have been making an impact this year include the list of Casey Haley , forward out of Petaluma High school and Cody Wittick, guard out of Tesoro High school. Wittick was also named to the all-tournament team at the Grossmont Invitational.

With the hopes of a post season run this year slowly dwindling,  Grossmont students can take solace that this may be a great rebuilding year that will propel their team to the top of the rankings next season with Tim Patrick leading the way.
