Coffee spelled backwards is “eeffoc”, which is funny, because until I’ve had my coffee, I don’t give “eeffoc” about anything. To some, that may just be a dumb joke, to others, it’s a real mindset that represents the real need for coffee to be sold on campus, a need that has just been filled.
In the same spot as the former Java Market in the Griffin Center, the new Griffin Grind officially opened March 23. The Griffin Grind is operated by Lemon Grove Coffee, making this spot an extension of a company already familiar with the market, ensuring students’ needs are understood and fulfilled in the best way possible.
As far as drinks go, they offer simple coffee, tea, matcha, different types of espresso, and a lineup of specialty lattes that offer different flavor combos and variety options. New beverages include the “Tropical Irishman” containing Irish cream, coconut and macadamia nuts, the “Queen Bee” with honey and cinnamon, and the staff-recommended “Hawaiian Creme Brulee,” made with white chocolate, caramel and macadamia nuts.
Irma Jordan, an employee at the Griffin Grind, said some of these specialty drinks are their best sellers: “I have a lot of people come in for a White Nutella, Loco Coco, Hawaiian. These are main, big-time sellers.”
As per the staff recommendation, I tried a Hawaiian Creme Brulee and was very pleased with the refreshing, sweet drink.
The selection is not just limited to drinks, however; they also serve breakfast foods, pre-packaged sandwiches, snacks and sodas. If coffee isn’t your main appeal, other offered beverages like Monster Energy, Alani Nu energy drinks and classic, cold bottled water make this a great place for everyone to stop by for a quick refreshment as the hot summer days approach.
Many people may not be aware the Griffin Grind is now open. Jordan remarked that some people are finding their way in, but friends telling friends seems to be what is primarily bringing in customers.
“It’s right now word of mouth so, you know, all over campus, we always tell people, tell their friends to come in,” Jordan said.
The Griffin Grind is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to noon on Fridays.
