CARBONDALE, Illinois (USANN4)–Tenured professors could soon be laid off at one Illinois institution. Southern Illinois University at Carbondale will be able to lay off tenured faculty members under the terms of a one-year contract it imposed on its faculty union. The contract allows the cash-strapped university to circumvent the usual procedure, requiring a formal declaration of fiscal crisis to lay off the tenured.
It also calls for faculty members to take four unpaid furlough days during the current academic year. The school’s faculty association plans to file a complaint, accusing the university of committing unfair labor practices.
