Many Griffins attending Grossmont College may need further clarification about what they want to do in the future. They may be undecided, undeclared, or haven’t met with a counselor to discuss future career plans. However, it’s never too late to reach out for guidance.

The Career Services Center, also known as Student Employment Services and Adult Reentry Center, helps students with career and employment readiness. This allows students to be able to explore different pathways being offered on campus.

The Career Services Center provides numerous ways to assist students such as career counseling, assessments, and workshops. The assessments allow the students to jump-start their career journey by answering questions that appeal to their interests. Workshops are engaging gatherings held on campus throughout the month that will give students the tips and tricks they need to be successful in the outside world.

Employment resources are available to Grossmont students and alumni. Handshake is an online job board utilized at community colleges, UCs and CSUs throughout the region including Grossmont. Through Handshake, college students have the opportunity to find jobs, paid internships and explore career options. Employers will also be able to contact the students directly through the app.

The Career Services Center aids students with crafting resumes, practicing mock interviews, networking online and learning about privacy and their digital footprint. The center hosts special meetings called “Employer Spotlight Wednesdays” where recruiters representing the companies they work for share their experiences and scout students for open positions to join their team.

The Career Services Center hosts annual job fairs which have helped many students who are refugees, dreamers and international learners in the county. These students are offered extra guidance from advisors due to cultural and language barriers. The fairs are a great occasion for employers who are eager to meet the students and give them access to jobs.

Renee Nasori, Career Services Supervisor, shared advice to students uncertain about where to start: “I share with students that it’s okay to be scared. It’s a lot, it’s overwhelming, but that’s why we’re here to help. Everyone has something to contribute and we can learn from each other.”

Nasori enjoys sharing her own story with students in hopes that they will be able to relate and feel less alone. She wants to reassure students that they can ask for help and not to be afraid.  The advisors on campus are there to support the students every step of the way and want the students to be successful.

“Meet with as many counselors as you can, and talk to as many team members as you can. Meet with your instructor. Their office hours are there for a reason,” Nasori said. “Take advantage of these resources. They’re free. We make them free for you.”

The Career Services Office is located in Building 60-140. Students can connect with counselors in person, at the virtual front desk, or through social media. You may also request services by filling out a Career Services Request Form or sending an email to [email protected]

Career Services Center hours are Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
