WASHINGTON, D.C. (USANN4)–The federal government has fined Virginia Tech $55,000 in connection with the 2007 shooting rampage on campus. The U.S. Department of Education says the school violated federal law by waiting too long to notify students. Thirty-two students and faculty members were killed in the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.
The gunman killed himself after the rampage. The $55,000 fine was the most the department could levy for Tech’s two violations of the Clery Act. The university avoided losing some or all of its $98 million in federal student aid, which is possible for a violation of that law.
