Feds join suit against for-profit colleges’ recruitment practices

WASHINGTON, D.C. (USANN4)–For the first time, the federal government is getting involved in the legal battle against student recruitment practices at for-profit colleges.   The Justice Department has joined an employee whistle-blower suit against Education Management Corporation.

The company is accused of illegally paying recruiters based on the number of students they enrolled.   In most cases, the government prohibits such incentive compensation for colleges accepting federal aid.   It is feared the practice will encourage companies to enroll unqualified students.
